These people think nothing of the impact which their selfish lifestyles have on much less fortunate people living in third world countries. Mining is essential for the continued existence of the human race as we know it. Without the continued extraction of the world's natural resources the majority of the human race would die from exposure, starvation or wars initiated by the desire to possess the diminishing resources already mined.
These NIMBY's want an abundance of luxury products and don't give a damn where the materials come from, how poor the people are who mined it, how lax the legislation is in these third world countries or what the environmental impact is, as long as it's far enough away from their back yard.
Extracting minerals in a carefully controlled and responsible manner from a local source would ease the burden on those poor countries which are currently providing the products we all use. Ireland should make an effort to provide for itself after hundreds of years of being a net importer of natural resources.
